ESD Protection Products

What is an ESD mat and why do I need one?

An ESD mat (Electrostatic Discharge mat) is a specialized  vinyl or rubber surface that safely dissipates static electricity to protect sensitive electronic components during manufacturing, assembly, or repair. You need an ESD mat if you work with: – Computer components and circuit boards – Semiconductor devices – Medical electronics – Aerospace electronics – Telecommunications equipment – Any sensitive electronic assemblies

ESD mats prevent static discharge that can damage or destroy electronic components, which often costs thousands of dollars in lost inventory and rework.

How do I choose the right ESD mat for my facility?

Consider these factors when selecting an ESD mat:

  1. Size: Measure your workspace – common sizes include 2’ x 3’, 2’ x 4’, and custom dimensions
  2. Thickness: Choose based on comfort and durability (typically 0.06” to 0.375”)
  3. Color: Blue, gray, green, or black (color doesn’t affect performance)
  4. Surface type: Smooth for paperwork, textured for tool traction
  5. Resistance: Should meet industry standards based on application
  6. Layer type: Single-layer for light use, dual-layer or multi-layer for heavy industrial use

Bertech offers custom cutting services to fit any workspace configuration.

What’s the difference between single-layer and two-layer ESD mats?

  • Single-layer ESD mats: Made in USA. They are cost-effective and made of Vinyl material.
  • Two-layer ESD mats: More durable with a dissipative top layer and conductive bottom layer. They are made of rubber material.
  • Three-layer ESD mats: Made in USA. They are premium grade and made of Vinyl material.

How do I properly ground an ESD mat?

To ground an ESD mat:

  1. Connect a ground cord from the mat’s snap to a verified ground point
  2. Use a common point ground (CGC151M) or direct earth ground
  3. Wear a grounded wrist strap for personal grounding
  4. Never connect ESD mats directly to power outlets – use only verified ground points.

What ESD standards do Bertech mats comply with?

Bertech ESD mats comply with ESD Association standards. They are independently tested by EOS/ESD Association Services, LLC.

How often should I replace my ESD mat?

Replace your ESD mat when: Physical damage occurs (tears, cuts, or excessive wear) – Cleaning no longer removes contamination – Typically every 2-5 years depending on usage intensity

Regular testing (monthly or quarterly) helps determine replacement timing.

Can I cut Bertech ESD mats to custom sizes?

Yes! Bertech offers custom cutting services for ESD mats. We can cut mats to your exact specifications to fit workbenches, desks, or irregularly shaped workspaces. Contact us with your dimensions for a custom quote.

Kapton Tape Products

What is Kapton tape?

Kapton tape is a polyimide film tape with silicone adhesive that withstands extreme temperatures (-73°C to +260°C or -100°F to +500°F). It’s electrically insulating, chemically resistant, and maintains its properties in harsh environments. Kapton is a DuPont trademark; the generic term is polyimide tape.

What industries use Kapton tape?

Kapton tape is essential in:

  1. Aerospace: Wire harness wrapping, thermal insulation
  2. Automotive: High-temperature masking, sensor protection
  3. Electronics manufacturing: PCB masking, wave soldering protection
  4. 3D printing: Heated bed surfaces, heat-resistant masking
  5. Powder coating: Masking during high-temperature curing
  6. Electric motors: Coil insulation and slot liners

What’s the difference between Kapton tape and regular polyimide tape?

Kapton is DuPont’s brand name for polyimide film. “Kapton tape” typically refers to brand-name DuPont film, while “polyimide tape” can be generic alternatives. Bertech offers both premium Kapton brand and high-quality polyimide tapes depending on your application requirements and budget.

What temperatures can Kapton tape withstand?

Kapton tape withstands temperature from -73°C to +260°C (-100°F to +500°F)

This makes it ideal for wave soldering, powder coating, thermal cycling, and extreme environment applications.

Can I use Kapton tape for 3D printing?

Yes! Kapton tape is excellent for 3D printing applications:

  1. Build plate surface for heated beds (improves adhesion)
  2. Withstands typical bed temperatures (100°C-120°C)
  3. Provides smooth, durable surface
  4. Easy part removal
  5. Better than painter’s tape for ABS and high-temp materials

Does Bertech offer custom-width Kapton tape?

Yes, Bertech provides custom slitting services for Kapton and polyimide tapes. We can cut rolls to your exact width specifications, perfect for automated dispensing systems or specific application requirements. Bertech rolls are 36 yards long.

What thicknesses of Kapton tape are available?

Bertech offers Kapton tape in various thicknesses: – 1 mil (0.001”) – 2 mil (0.002”) – 3 mil (0.003”) – 5 mil (0.005”)

Thicker tapes provide more durability and insulation; thinner tapes conform better to complex shapes.

Finger Cots & Hand Protection

What are finger cots used for?

Finger cots are protective coverings for fingers used in:

  1. Electronics assembly: Preventing fingerprint oils and ESD contamination
  2. Medical/dental: Covering wounds, protecting gloved fingers
  3. Cleanrooms: Maintaining contamination control
  4. Manufacturing: Protecting products from skin oils and particulates
  5. Quality inspection: Handling sensitive products without contamination

Bertech Finger Cots are an economical alternative to gloves.

What’s the difference between latex, nitrile, and natural rubber finger cots?

  • Latex finger cots: Good elasticity and comfort, but can cause allergies
  • Nitrile finger cots: Latex-free, excellent chemical resistance, ideal for allergic individuals
  • Natural rubber finger cots: Superior elasticity and fit, may contain latex proteins

For electronics and cleanroom use, Bertech’s powder-free nitrile finger cots offer a better alternative to prevent particle contamination.

Are Bertech finger cots powder-free?

Yes, Bertech offers powder-free finger cots that are essential for:

  • Cleanroom environments (Class 10 to Class 100,000)
  • Electronics assembly (prevents powder contamination)
  • Medical applications (reduces contamination risk)

Powder-free options are available in latex, nitrile, and natural rubber.

What sizes do finger cots come in?

Finger cots typically come in: – Small – Medium – Large – X-Large

Bertech can help you determine the right size based on your workforce needs.

Can finger cots be used in ESD-sensitive environments?

Yes, Bertech offers ESD-safe finger cots specifically designed for electronics manufacturing. They dissipate static charge while protecting components from contamination. Standard finger cots can generate static, so always specify ESD-safe versions for electronics work.
